The Squid and the Wha.....?

If you've been keeping pace with Rowdy's frenetic posting spree, you may have caught a mention of the film 'The Squid and the Whale', which we saw last Saturday with the indefatigable Marty. An intriguing film showing the destructive powers of divorce, it will also make you writhe with discomfort like a man witnessing his own vasectomy. I was ready to walk out after half an hour, because some of the scenes are just that disconcerting. We stuck it out though, hoping in vain for some comic relief, that mainly coming in the form of the tennis scenes. You'll know what I mean if you watch it, but I strongly advise you not too, not at the cinema at least. It's maybe worth a view on DVD, but you'll probably need a stiff drink beforehand. None of the characters are incredibly likeable, and personally I felt that the flaws in some of the characters were present in me. That adds to the whole discomfort thing, having your perceived shortcomings displayed on a big screen for all to see.

Anyhoo, in conclusion I give this film two shoulders up (as in shrugged).
